The Kota tribe is one of the most culturally distinctive indigenous primitive tribal communities of the Nilgiris district in Tamil Nadu, India. Classified by the Government of India as a Scheduled Tribe and Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group, the Kotas have maintained a traditional way of life through centuries of social change. This article examines the various customs life of Kotas, including their settlements, language, dress and ornamentation, social organisation, marriage practices, religious beliefs, festivals, food habits, crafts, and music.
